Common Household Foods that are Dangerous or Poisonous to Dogs

Grapes and Raisins - Are highly toxic and can damage the kidneys. Raisins are more toxic than grapes and should never be fed - not even one.
Chocolate - highly toxic - can affect the cardiovascualar and nervous systems
Caffeine (Coffee, Tea, Soda, etc) - can affect the nervous system
Nuts (other than Peanuts) - can contain traces of a mold from the shell that is toxic to dogs
Macadamia nuts - contain a toxin that can affect the nervous and digestive systems
Onions - can damage red blood cells, causes anemia, can build up in the system over time
Garlic - can damage red blood cells, less toxic than onions but can build up in the system over time
Mushrooms - can contain dangerous toxins
Moldy or Spoiled Foods - Gross. Does this need further explanation?
Cooked Poultry Bones - can splinter and perforate the digestive system
Xylitol (artificial sweetener, common in sugar-free gum) - can cause liver failure and death, even in small amounts
Large amounts of sugar or sugary foods, simple carbs (ie: white breads, cookies, candy) - can lead to obesiety and diabetes, can cause problems with yeast (ear infections)
Tobacco or Marajuana - affects the nervous system, can cause death
Yeast Dough - can expand in the stomach
Fruit Pits and Seeds - most contain harmful toxins
Potato peels, raw potatoes, green parts of potatoes or tomatoes, Rhubard leaves - contain oxalates, which affect the digestive and nervous systems
Alcohol (beer, wine, liquor) - can lead to coma or death
Nutmeg - can affect the central nervous system
Excessive Fat or Fatty Foods (ie: turkey skin, fat trimmed from steaks) - can cause pancreatitis
Hops - can cause death
Corn Cobs, Persimmons - can cause intestinal blockage
Human vitamin supplements - can be toxic to dogs, can damage the intestines and organs
Human medications & prescriptions (unless recommended by your vet) including tylenol, advil - can cause death in dogs

The following items should be avoided or used with caution as they may pose potential dangers, particularly in large amounts.

Potatoes (never feed raw) - use caution to ensure all green parts are removed, never feed sprouting potatoes, cook thoroughly or avoid
Tomatoes - green parts are toxic, toxicity of the fruit is controversial
Raw eggs, raw fish, raw poultry & meats - can contain harmful bacteria such as salmonella
Large amounts of salt, baking soda or baking powder
Avocados - pits can be dangerous; leaves, fruit, seeds and bark contain persin which can cause vomiting and diarrhea in some dogs; some dogs tolerate avocado (it's found in certain dog foods) while others do not.
Bones - can puncture or lodge in the digestive system, can cause vomiting or diarrhea
Broccoli - contains isothiocyanate which can irritate the digestive system if fed in large amounts
Baby Food - check the label to be sure it doesn't contain onion powder or any other toxic ingredient
Liver - large amounts can be toxic
Rawhide - can become lodged in the throat causing suffocation, can cause intestinal blockages

Foods-Common Allergic Reactions
These foods are common causes of allergic reactions, such as red, itchy skin.

Peanuts - can cause death if your pet is allergic to them
Wheat
Corn
Gluten
Milk and Dairy Products - some dogs are lactose intolerant and dairy can irritate their digestive system.
Protein sources (Chicken, Beef, Lamb) are also common causes of allergies. Changing to a different protein source can be a helpful way to eliminate potential allergens.
