Hi, I have been looking a Mastiff for a couple of years now, but there aren't many in my area. I finally found one that wasn't too far away, and I've only had her (Precious) for three days. I've been researching everything on Mastiffs for a long time, but especially since I knew I was going to get her. I'm very concerned about gastric torsion, mainly because in my research I can't seem to find an amount of food that I'm supposed to give her at this age. I would have asked the lady I bought her from, but when she told me she was feeding the pups Purina Puppy Chow, I realized she must not know what she is doing! She will be 8 weeks Tuesday, and I've been feeding her about a cup of dry food 4 times a day, but she has a huge tummy and this worries me. I know it is more common to feed 3 times a day, but she wines when she's hungry, so I feed her. Should I be giving her less, or should I give her more only 3 times a day? Please Help!
Hello,

It's OK to feed her 4 times a day (probably a good idea since she is so young), just make sure you're adjusting the portions down so you're not overfeeding her. If you're feeding an appropriate giant breed puppy food, there should be a chart on the bag with recommended cups per day based on age and weight - just divide it by 4 and give that amount at each meal. You should also talk to your vet for assistance with calculating the correct amount to feed and watch her body condition carefully so you can adjust as necessary.

As for bloat, yes it is a concern with mastiffs but not typically in such young puppies. If her tummy is swollen, it is most likely worms. Again, take her in to the vet so they can do a test to make sure everything is OK.
