20 weeks - 78.8 lbs.

His "Groucho Marx" eyebrows seem to be staying intact. He's such a sweet boy, but might be the lickiest mastiff ever!

Brooklyn is gorgeous!! I think you might have some competition on the "lickiest" mastiff however, Optimus just loves to love!! He doesn't usually lick your face unless you ask him, but he will wag his entire body & lick the air around you!! It is hilarious! Smile

Looks like our boys are just a few weeks apart. It will be fun to watch them both grow. Thanks for the compliment. I think he's pretty awesome. And they get big so fast! As for the licking, I think it's cute for now, but we're trying to deter it because eventually he'll be bigger than us and FORCE us to undergo tongue baths. Confused

I hear you on that one!! There are so many "cute" things he does now & did when he was smaller that we had to nip in the bud!! People were saying "why are you so strict!! He's JUST A LITTLE PUPPY" - Yah...for like 3 months then he was a full grown dog, yet still just a puppy!!! Begging, pawing, jumping, NOT SO CUTE when he's 240 lbs!!!! He is really good though, caught on quickly to sit and ask for attention rather than jump up or reach out with his paw!!

We got lucky on the jumping. The breeder had a 3 year old so B's never jumped up, which is good because we have an almost 3 year old daughter. But that doesn't stop the knock-down factor! Sweet, clumsy kids.
Brooklyn is 5 months old today! Calendars are silly because he was 20 weeks on the 8th but his birthday was on the 18th so there ya go. If I go with weeks:
21.5 weeks -- 83.1 lbs.

Still gaining about 5 pounds a week. In the last couple of weeks I have started noticing slobber -- mostly on my tv and my couch. But I'm okay with the slobber because of the awesome benefits that come with owning these gentle giants!
Here's my big love who prefers the kitchen to any other room in the house. I'm not sure if he just wants to be with me, if it's hot, or if he just prefers to always be underfoot!

Brooklyn bloated this evening. He is currently at the Emergency Clinic in surgery. Please send healing thoughts and prayers to my beloved boy. Thank you.

Thanks for the support. He made it successfully through surgery. I got about 3 hours of sleep and am up now. I pick him up in an hour to move him for the day to my regular vet. It is likely that he will have to go back to the Emergency Vet tonight. I'll keep this site posted. What a horrendous event. Sad But at least my boy is a fighter.

Oh my goodness!! We hope everything works out!! Will check back for updates...we'll be thinking of you guys
GREAT NEWS!!!

Brooklyn is doing better than I could have hoped for. I guess the two biggest dangers when it comes to bloat is that when the blood supply is cut off from their organs, they start to die. This causes extra surgery time and complications afterwards. I caught it within a half hour of it starting and all internal organs were in excellent shape. The other big concern is that, when the pressure of the bloat lets up, the rush of blood to the organs, especially the heart, can cause arrhythmias. Brooklyn has not had any arrhythmia according to his EKG. So, as long as his EKG today continues to show a strong, steady rhythm and he is willing to eat a little, my lover boy will be coming home tonight!!!

When I saw him, I got on the floor with him and he leaned against me and put his head to mine, which I like to think was a heart hug. I sat with him for about an hour this morning and he tried to curl up in my lap!

I'll be sure to let you guys know if he gets to come home this evening. Thanks so much for your support. I think my big boy's gonna grow to be a crusty old man mastiff. Big Grin

This was one of the scariest thing I've ever been through. They say the most important thing is to be aware of what your dog looks like when he's NOT okay -- know your pet, in other words. The thing that saved him and gave him such a speedy recovery was that I recognized his symptoms within the first half hour and reacted very quickly. We are going in this morning for some follow-up bloodwork and, if that comes back normal, he gets his catheter out. Then, it's just two weeks of what my 3 year old calls his "sick hat" (e-collar) and then he'll get his stitches out.

I remember the panic, the pain, the sadness. But almost like it was a dream. Brooklyn acts like nothing ever happened. He eats well, he wants to play (I'm not letting him), he's super-sweet, he sleeps behind my chair... I always thought that if I had a mastiff that got bloat or hip dysplasia, that would be the end. Who has that kind of money just sitting around to spend on their dog? Well, obviously me. And it was worth every penny.

Thanks for your support. Smile

Glad to hear that Brooklyn is on the road to recovery. Bloat is one of my biggest fears with Yogi.
You brought tears to my eyes. I am so happy Brooklyn doing well
I'm so happy to hear Brooklyn is ok!!
I was worried for you guys & honestly thought about your pup LOTS since I read your first post!! Brooklyn is barely a month older than Optimus & I could NOT imagine going through that!! Money wouldn't even cross my mind with Op either...they are priceless and part of the family how could you not spend it to save them!!!? Good job on noticing it right away. The early detection is awesome, but what scares me is that we live in a very small town in Northern Ontario...the CLOSEST vet we could possibly get to is a 3 hour drive away...and I'm not even 100% sure if they would be able to do the surgery...the next BIG centre that would deal with these things would be about 6 or 7 hours away...we are VERY thankful he is a slow-poke eater as I hear that decreases the risk of bloat.

Anyways, sorry for the rambling...I'm just relieved your baby is ok & look forward to seeing some "crusty old man" pictures of him in the future Wink

To be honest, money crossed MY mind. We just didn't have it. However, we made the decision to apply for the care credit if there were no other options. Luckily, my aunt stepped in and agreed that we had to save him. So grateful to have my puppy back. It would be scary to live that far from a vet. I have read that what has helped others is having a plan with your vet about what could be done if it happened. This woman's story was helpful to me: <http://www.ginnie.com/DaDane345.shtml>

Thanks for all of your kind words. Here's to our boys both being crusty old men in the distant future! Tongue

Cheers to Crusty Old Drool Faced Mastiffs!!!!

My boy is faithfully lying under my feet as per usual as I type this... He is my best bud, and I have said the "who would spend so much money on a dog if he's sick" line before...but when I come home and he doesn't just wag his tail, but wags his whole body as he howls & talks to me, and when I am down and he groans and rests his chin on my lap as he looks at me with his BIG puppy eyes I would skip my truck payments & mortgage & groceries before I would hold a dime back from him. I don't have an idea how expensive it was but I think you did the right thing & dogs are not dummies they can tell when someone loves them and now as much as you may have a big fat bill to pay you have a drool faced pup that will wag himself silly when you come home for lets hope at least 10 years or more!! If that isn't pay back enough I don't know what is!!! Maybe I am crazy but I have never felt like I have wasted a dime on a dog....people often ask "how can you afford to feed a dog that big!!?!!??!" my usual response is "how much do your cigarettes & beer cost per month? I bet I get a lot more back from the money I spend on him than you do on that...." Ha Ha!!

Sorry...I am very "rambley" today!!!

I love the rambling! It makes me secure that I am not alone in my obsession with this breed. I have never felt this way about any other dog (breed) before and have tried hard to recreate the bond with other breeds because they had less health problems. But I couldn't do it. You're right. The love and light that my mastiffs have added to my life is priceless.

Regardless of the slobber, food cost, vet bills, flatulence, snoring and slobber (yup, said that twice on purpose!), my home will ALWAYS have a mastiff in it. Heart
