My 5 month old mastiff has this brown build-up on the crest of his nose. I owned a brindle that did not have this, but was wondering if it is normal and if it is common in fawns? I am thinking that I should warm-compress and maybe add some bag balm or something. Ideas and experience please!

This pic shows it a little better.

Has he been digging? Rooting around outside unsupervised? Our young male Kahless ate rocks when he was that age. He would come in with mud/dirt on his nose. Once he became constipated and ill from eating the rocks. We found out that rocks can cause potentially fatal intestinal blockages that at the very least will be quite painful and could require surgery. If untreated these blockages could result in death. The dry nose could be symptomatic of a more serious problem.
Once we realized what was going on, we surpervised his outdoor time and trained him not to eat rocks by offering treats and rewarding good behavior. We haven't had a problem since.

B used to eat lots of rocks and sticks when he was really little and I started watching his outdoor activity then because I figured, if this is prickly picking up, it had to be painful to pass (sorry, kind of graphic). When he is outside he is either sleeping or wrestling with our rough collie. Also, it is just the top of his nose that is dry. Maybe he needs sunblock or something and he's rooting in the dirt to protect his skin? Oh jeez. It's okay to be kind of neurotic about mastiffs, right? Thanks for your thoughts.
Looks like he's been nosing around in the dirt to me, too. You can put a little olive oil on a tissue and rub it on there to moisturize and gently remove some of the dry skin.

Really? That's great. I love household remedies. I'll try it and let you know.
