Smile Rocky (AKC English Mastiff) South Carolina
We got Rocky at eight weeks and he is getting so big. Just some quick info on him, is is completely healthy so far (hope no problems as he grows), he was house broken after only 2 1/2 weeks, YAH!!!! Easiest EVER! He does have issues with other dogs, they scare him. We are working on this with him. We only personally know two balanced dogs for him to play with and those interactions are not as often as we would like or that he needs. So we take him everywhere we go. And EVERYONE loves him because he is soo darn cute and well behaved. We really love this big guy. I am new to this site and hope watch other mastiffs grow along with ours. I joined because I want to know that Rocky is on the right track for growth.

Rocky is so cute! But those PAWS! Okay, Ozzie is still a pip squeak. Bigger than he was, but OMG, all the pups on this group are amazing. Oops, Oz needs to go out!

Journey is also very bothered by other dogs. I finished puppy preschool with her and the dogs in the class didn't bother her. We start school again in January. I really want her to be comfortable in other dogs company but it's not happening. I'm going to start taking her to puppy playtime on the weekends, it's free at my vet clinic and I'm amazed at the amount of dogs that attend. It was pretty impressive.
All we can do is try.
Rocky is adorable and...WOW...he does have some big feet. My Journey just turned 5 months and 56 lbs.
Good luck.

RE: Rocky (AKC English Mastiff) South Carolina
You can try standing between your pup and a new dog to try and make them more comfortable. It helps them to understand that you are in charge of the situation and you're "protecting" them as a leader by placing yourself between the two. It should help them to warm up and they should come out from behind you to check out the other dog once they feel like the situation is under control.

Bringing treats along to make it a positive experience is also helpful.

Just wanted to let everyone I started a group on YahooGroups called Carolina Mastiffs. I've had a hard time finding people who are local (in my state of South Carolina) with mastiffs, so I started a group in hope to meet others with Mastiff share stories, experiences, growth charts, and ask questions. And one day even hold a event. So please stop by and become a member of my new group and help me build a great place for mastiff owners! I plan to have something new everyday!

Hope to see some of you soon!

I love the way he's glaring at that cat - like he just doesn't quite trust it yet. Cute.

LOL, she woke him up, I was trying to get the picture quietly, but the camera made a noise and he lifted his head and well the picture says it all, I thought it was a cute one. They play together, a lot, our other cat wants nothing to do with him and Rocky doesn't trust him at all ao the feeling is mutual between the two. But Chloe (the one in the picture) and Rocky chase each other around the house and sleep next to each other. Many times she starts playing with him first.

I attached a picture of rocky and the male cat (the one that he truly doesn't trust).

RE: Rocky (AKC English Mastiff) South Carolina
Your kitties look like my Ragdolls. And ragdolls are exactly how Ozzie treats them. The female cat keeps her distance, but the male cat seems to put himself in harm's way, and if I tell Ozzie to stop chewing on the kitty that cat just sticks around for more. I don't think that Ozzie has any concerns about the cats, or anything else for that matter. He is mister happy-go-lucky all the time, and then he finds a corner and goes to sleep. We were in a panic looking for him the other day and finally found him in his crate! That was a first.

I was just looking over a few growth charts on here and seems like Rocky is x-large for his age, am I right is is huge for his age? He stand 26in tall shoulder measurement. It also looks like his weight gain is starting to slow is this normal?

Yikes! I'm not the best judge being a new mastiff owner myself, and having a pint-sized mastiff, but he seems HUGE to me!

I am in SC also, I have 5 Mastiffs and they are all different. Mine range from 9 years old to 2 years old. I can try and answer any questions that you may have.

His growth so far seems to be just the same as Yogi's was. And if you look at Yogi's chart... he hasn't really slowed down yet. I'm curious to see where he ends up. Smile

Every puppy grows at a different pace - there really isn't a "normal" weight he should be. It's so easy to drastically effect their growth by adjusting the amount fed, the best way to "guess" as to how big he will be is to look at the size of the parents. Most puppies will grow to be about the same size as mom & dad.

Yeah I know about he will be about the size of his parents, but my concern was did anyone think maybe he was growing too fast. He just seemed really big to ( he is right along with Yogi's growth chart though) me compared to most of the others. I know you shouldn't really "compare" with others but I don't want him to have bones problems because he is growing too fast.

RE: Rocky (AKC English Mastiff) South Carolina
The best thing to do really is to ask your vet to calculate daily calories needed. If you've been in within the last year, most are happy to do it over the phone. That way you can be sure you're not overfeeding. I remember the chart on the Holistic Select giant breed puppy being really close to what my vet recommended (when he happened to fit within the weight/age range listed on the chart) but I think they have changed the food slightly since then so I'm not sure how it would compare now.

I watched front legs and toes closely when monitoring growth. If you see any over-sized, swollen looking joints (excessively knobby) or if legs or toes start to bow or curve rather than maintaining a nice straight line, you may have a problem. You can also monitor weight by watching the waistline and area around the ribs. You should be able to feel them easily under the skin. Keep in mind if you overfeed a giant breed puppy, it takes a lot for them to get chunky as most of the extra energy will just go to making them grow faster (which is why it's important to monitor calories).

We switch his food to Blackwood for performance and large puppies. Our local pet store said it was a really good and affordable brand. What do you think?

Slow his growth down- is he on Adult food? I would change and make sure there is no more than 23% protein. Mastiffs are born with the genetic stamps of their height and weight- so it is our job to slow them down as much as we can. It takes about 4 years to completely grow.
