When Peabody was a puppy, he had a really hard time staying afloat, too. I think it's because they have so much bone vs. fat and muscle while they're growing that they just can't stay up. I had to keep propping him up, but I kept at it and eventually he got the hang of it. He LOVES swimming now, but every now and then he'll get distracted and forget to paddle. lol. Mowgli sinks like a rock.

That's so funny to me. My last mastiff was afraid of water. I finally got him to go in a small stream by going through it multiple times myself. He was such a big chicken. Barked at his own shadow!

Optimus WAS scared of water...unless it was in his bowl!...he hated waves, but now he's getting pretty good at swimming and is always standing chest deep playing with sticks & whatever else. He also like sticking his face in and blowing bubbles!! But he isn't the most "floaty" dog out there, maybe when he's older & has some meat on his bones he won't have to work so hard!?

Optimus Updated Growth Chart (5months)
Born February 7th 2010

3.5wks - 4 lbs
5 wks - 10 lbs
6 wks - 14.5 lbs
9 wks - 22.4 lbs
10 wks - 29.8 lbs (plus 3 days)
11 wks - 32.8 lbs
12 wks - 35.4 lbs
13 wks - 40.0 lbs
14 wks - 45.0 lbs
16 wks - 52.0 lbs
17 wks - 58.2 lbs - June 7th 2010 (4 month Birthday!)
18 wks - 61.0 lbs (less 3 days)
19 wks - 65.0 lbs (less 2 days)
20 wks - 70.6 lbs
21 wks - 76.5 lbs - July 7th 2010 (5 months old today!!)

Wow! I can't believe he is 76.5 pounds! For the first few months you could visibly see him getting bigger even though we are around him constantly, but now he seems to be at a stage where we don't notice the change as much. All our friends say he is growing like crazy, but it's not as easy to see when we are around him all the time. I have noticed his hips are high then he seems level...hips high...level...so I KNOW he's growing, but I didn't think he gained nearly 20 pounds in the past month!! Wow!

Right now he is about 25'' at the shoulder & 26.5-27'' at his hips. I don't know if that is tall or is that normal? Is he going to be huge?? HaHa! I hope so!

He has lost all his baby teeth and has his BIG BOY teeth in and my oh' my he has BIG TEETH!! Gentle as can be though...he was really mouthy for a while when the eye teeth were coming in, and had a few nights where he'd be up a few times not feeling great, but now that they have pushed through and the painful part seems to be over he's back to himself sleeping in our walk in closet because the living room is just too far away from Mommy & Daddy...we call him our closet monster Smile

Guarding his chair from his little buddy Cujo

I don't have the heart to break it to him that I think he has officially outgrown his favourite chair!!

Aw, our boys are growing up! I just measured Brooklyn and he is around 26-27" at the shoulder and hips, which means that we are probably in for another growth spurt soon! Brooklyn will be 6 months on the 18th and is almost 100 pounds so I would assume that he's gonna be a biggun' and Optimus' growth chart is similar (within 7 pounds, at least). I guess only time will tell... Smile

By the way, he has such a great mask! So pretty.

Found out today that Optimus' daddy-o is only 150 lbs as of last month (~2 yrs), but they said he's pretty gangly right now and has some filling out to do, but they don't think he'll be getting any taller....they are going to send updated pics of him though so I'm excited to see how he looks, he was a GORGEOUS dog.
Hopefully Op takes after his 265 lb Granddaddy!! He is on another growth spurt sleeping for like 12 hrs at a time and eating like it's his job while he's awake. We can actually notice his growth in the past few days which says he is gettin' BIG again! Smile

Looking forward to pics of Op's daddy. B's granddad was thick but still under 180, according to the breeder. It's just a wait-and-see around here. But I don't ever remember having a dog that slept this much!!!

RE: Optimus my English Mastiff (Growth Chart)
This weekend was a busy one!!
I had my entire family up for a visit. My 3 brothers & parents stayed with me and my sister stayed with a friend in town, but they hung out here a lot. So between everyone we had between 10-16 kids here all the time, all under 10 years old, the youngest of the bunch being 7 months, and not once did Optimus knock anyone over, steal food off a plate or be rough with anyone. The kids LOVED HIM, some of them weren't SO fond of his slobbery kisses, but he usually would leave them alone when they seemed like they didn't like him. They were playing with him, feeding him, taking food away from him, giving him treats, making him do tricks & everything!! I was very happy with my boy & how well he behaved with all the kiddo's!!
We haven't weighed him lately but he is growing lots, he must be at the very least 90 lbs by now...I need to get him weighed! Smile

26 wks - 97.0 lbs (August 7th, 6 months old!)

Well we hit the 6 months mark! I was really hoping he would make 100 pounds at 6 months, but we turned up 3 lbs shy!! Oh well...the next day he grew again, hips WAY up! So I'm sure he will hit & pass 100 lbs by the end of this week. He is a big lover...we really could not imagine having any other type of dog than this big drooling sweetheart!! Smile

Optimus the Submarine (He walked on bottom until he was completely under water...forgot to start swimming I guess?)

I love this shot...he was on uneven ground so it looks like his hips & shoulders are the same! Trick shot Wink

Optimus & his little buddy, Cujo

Campfire smoke infront of his face...but I just love his cute "little" face!

He looks so much like my Marley.....she was 5 months this week and is just under 80 lbs...and yep about 2" higher at the back end as well !

What makes you think they won't get any taller .... does their height stop around 6 months??

I don't think they stop at 6 months? When I met Optimus' dad he was 16 months and his hips were about 4 inches higher than his shoulders!! He is still growing like a weed, in fact I think he is hitting one of his biggest growth spurts in a long time! When he was a little guy he'd sleep lots for a few days then have a HUGE growth spurt, and he's been sleeping insane amounts for the past 3 or 4 days so I know it's coming!! I think his head is getting bigger? HA! He's curled up on the couch with his head pressed against me right now...such a "guard dog" !

I took these pictures of Optimus & think they are hilarious so I thought I would share!! Smile He is huge now, and quite annoying recently with his constant need for chewing on his favourite new toy...a rubber chicken that squawks when he chews it 100 bites per second!! ....but I still love him the mostest!! Smile

Say CHEEEEEZZZE!!

The d@mn rubber chicken....but he loves it so much how could I possibly take it away!!??

lol. I love the upside down floppy lips.

You can stick the end of a pair of scissors inside the little squeaky part and it will pop the center piece out so it stops squeaking. All of our toys have been "de-squeaked" except one...for special occasions.

Hmm...something to consider... This is his only squeaker toy, since he has crushed all the other ones to a point of no squeaking!! So I suppose I can deal with it. I really can't believe how big he's getting in the past little while. He is a giant! Smile

RE: Optimus my English Mastiff (Growth Chart)
I love the thumbnails! I especially like the one where Optimus's eye is showing, teeth too. Ozzie's teeth look so big compared to every other dog I've ever known/had in my life, that we always think it looks like the doggie dentures from the commercial! Squeak toys? Outside only. It's a great way to reel the dogs in if they've run out front, just squeak a couple of times and get out of their way!

He has been great, same old goof...seems to have a lot more energy the past little while!! We just bought him a new doggy bed, and it is WONDERFUL. I recommend the brand to anyone!! It was shipped (no fee) and arrived 2 days early, and it is great!! He loves it!! It is HUGE, he will not out grow it...6 feet x 4.5 feet. He looks TINY when he sits on it!!

He's such a big boy! And what a crazy bed. Is this your attempt to keep him off the couch, because we both know that he'll still steal it from you! He's following Brooklyn's weight by about 3-4 pounds difference. Handsome man.
