Eli (Saint Bermastiff)

Hello!

I've been reading the forums, for a while now, in anticipation of getting my new Saint Bermastiff puppy. Eli arrived last Sunday (July 11th). I'm incredibly excited to finally have him. Below is his growth chart & my first attempt at posting a picture. The local pet store has a scale, so hopefully I can get him in once a week or so to watch his progress.

He's so handsome! I'd never heard of these bermastiffs until I found this site, but they sure are cool looking!

Thanks! We probably all congregate here since there aren't many sites about Saint Bermastiffs and Hazel's growth chart is one of the top links on google

Your Brooklyn is gorgeous as well. I read about him bloating.. how scary. I'm glad he's doing well.

Eli is adorable!!! I love his cute little white chin and back paws!
Good job on the shaking! It is so fun watching them learn new tricks. One of our favorite tricks that we taught Hazel was knowing her left and right when she was about 4 months old. She knows to only take treats out of the right hand.Our neighbor was over and taught our older dog in less then an 1 hour. So I decided to teach Hazel...only took about 15 minutes before she was picking it up! Most recently she decided to start getting ice cubes and water from the fridge by herself...a little naughty, but so cute! Her little nose is the same height as the buttons to push so she just gets a little drink or ice cube everytime she walks through the kitchen. She always does it non stop when we have company. She loves all the attention!
I can't wait to wait Eli grow! Keep posting pictures!

Someone showed up at the dog park yesterday giving away his one year old female st. bernard and a lightbulb went on. Luckily, it quickly went off! Just what I need! These big dogs are expensive and, after B-man bloating, I think it'll be a few years before we add to our clan. I'm excited to watch your boy grow!

Thanks! Teaching left and right is a great idea. I'll definitely work that in! Before Eli, I had Toby, my Saint Bernard. He used to do the same thing with the fridge. There was rarely a day when I wouldn't come home from work to find a small pond on my kitchen floor. Too bad they don't have thumbs.. we could teach them to do some light house cleaning

Eli loves attention too. He'll sit on people's shoes if we're out and they don't show him any interest. I'm pretty sure he's bullying them into petting him!

Eli is now 12 weeks and 30 lbs. He's completely potty trained and just got over his fear of the blow dryer. His new thing is jumping into the bathtub while I'm showering and trying to catch all the water from the showerhead. It's a sight to see. He's starting to grow some longer wavy hair on his back, so I'm wondering if he's going to take on some more Saint Bernard qualities from his mom. Attached is Eli and a picture of his older brother at 6 months.

OMG, he is such a cool-lookin' pup! I watched a movie the other day where a dog jumped into the shower with this guy and so I could totally visualize your crazy pup. Dogs are so goofy. After this site, I think my next dog might just be a Bermastiff! (Although I totally am in love with my super-nasty mastiff boy!)

Eli is now 15 weeks. We had a vet appointment to get his final booster shot and the vet mentioned that I may want to give him another round of the parvo vaccination in a month. She said it was totally up to me but it was her experience that the larger breed puppies sometimes require another shot. Has anyone heard of this? I also chose to not give him the lepto shot. I have a slight fear of over-vaccinating but I want to keep him as healthy as possible. Thanks! Attached is a picture of him playing in the yard today.

I DO give the lepto vaccine to my mastiffs. Although I find that most dogs do have some kind of reaction to it, I have a friend who lost his 11 year old mastiff -- not to old age or hip dysplasia or cancer -- to Lepto. It was very sad and very fast. Lepto is not all that prevalent but I err on the safe side. As for the extra parvo, I've never heard of that and I think we often over-vaccinate our pets. My cat (6 years old and indoor) gets vaccinated every three years and my dogs will too once they are four -- I do get a three year rabies because that is the only one required by law. I think of it this way: I don't still get vaccines every year and neither does my 3 year old; why would my pet? Good luck!

Our vet's standard protocol is a booster at 16 weeks, then one year, then every three years after that. I think the boosters probably last the dog's lifetime though and anything after the 1yr shot is likely over-vaccinating. Regardless, we've been following this protocol (including Lepto) and haven't had any issues...that we can specifically trace to the vaccines, anyway.

We have the option to do a titer blood test to check for antibodies and if the dog is still immune there's no need to give the shot (other than rabies, which is also required by law here every 3 years) but it's a really expensive test. Maybe that would be the best way to go if you're worried about it though?
