Hello guys,

I just wanted to say hey. As you can see, I am new here. My wife and I just adopted our new English Mastiff puppy. His name is Meeko. I will put up some pictures when I get them on this computer. Anyway...He will be 16 weeks on Thursday and weighs about 47 pounds. I thought this was big until I checked out the growth charts on this site. He seems to be about 10 pounds less than some of the Mastiffs on the growth charts. I hope he is ok. He looks good though. He has a visible waist and you can barely feel his ribs. I suppose each dog grows at different rates. My vet actually told me that growing slow is his preference. Anyway, I will keep you guys posted with pics and probably ask a lot of questions.

I am considering making my own supplements to feed my dogs. I started pulling out all this meat from my freezer. Lamb lungs, lamb heart, and lamb shoulder. Then I boiled it with some Yukon Gold pototoes. I am going to add 100% rolled oats, a small amount of blueberries from our blueberry excursion in 7/09, and some Nupro. I will also add some flaxseed meal or flaxseed oil...
Any thoughts of what else I can put into this to make a tasty treat for the pups? I'm thinking of scooping it out on parchment paper with an ice cream scooper and freezing it in baby portions...

I researched and researched a ton of dog food. I have 6 dogs, each are on a different food. Fromms, Evo, Kirkland, Orijen, and Dick VanPatten's Natural Balance LID. Yes, I spend a ton of $ on premium dog food!
My question is- that I was told by several sources that Mastiffs are genetically predispositioned to grow a certain height and weight and it is our jobs to slow them down as get them to grow evenly and proportionally. So, the decision I made to feed my puppy a 2/3 combo of adult Kirkland and 1/3 combo of small bite Evo. I also give a 1/2 scoop of Nupro each day, divided into 4 meals. And Dick Van Patten's food roll, maybe a tbsp or so mixed in his bowl.
So am I crazy food mama? Each of these ingrediants are excellent sources of nutrition. I just need input .

2/26/2010- 18.5 lbs. Vet Checked, looks fantastic, fecal normal
3/1/2010- started with runny poop
3/2/2010- 20.4 lbs. Vet checked, fecal normal, swollen lymph node on right rear leg, right nose green mucus, right eye green mucus. On Clavamox for 10 days now I think this is stress related to the change of environment. Poor baby. Unless anyone else has thoughts?
3/3/2010- ahh, I can exhale. He's doing much better. Mama's homemade chicken and rice with some yogurt got his poop back on track. That and a little fluids last night from the best vet in the world who saw me on 45 minutes notice (and felt bad it was that long!). Thank you God for letting this puppy get well and giving me sleep at night! I am grateful!
3/6/2010 - 22 lbs. eating well, pooping well, still on clavamox, supplementing some plain yogurt to balance his intestinal system
He's not eating a ton- and I'm OK with that because each meal is caloric. So, he's only eating 3 cups of dry food/day, but supplementing that with yogurt and my lamb dinners. He is growing so nicely.
3/10/2010- Vet again- 24.8 lbs. Very nicely growing. Poop solid- so happy- lymph node not swollen anymore. Yeah! Going well.

Children of the 80's might remember a cartoon called 'Thundarr the Barbarian'. Ookla is one of Thundarr's trusty sidekicks. He’s from a humanoid race called a “Mok” - like a Wookie, only different. My hubby and our friend came up with it, and it seemed fitting.

We adopted Ookla from his breeder when he was 16 weeks old. I know that's a little older than most people usually adopt puppies, but I think he was just waiting for us. We were still recovering from the loss of our beloved Boxer, Max, 10 months prior. So, we weren't sure if we were ready for another dog, yet. But, when we visited the breeder (on a "just browsing" visit), we knew it was meant to be!

We brought Ookla home on 12-23-09, and we're learning a lot about this amazing breed! I'm so happy that I stumbled across your forums. You've been very helpful, so I thought I'd share a little about our little speed bump that we love so much. This photo was taken the day after Christmas - 16 weeks old.

Hi, I would like to introduce my new puppy, Woodrow. He's half English Mastiff, half German Shepherd. The first thing people say when they see him is "Wow, look at those paws!" My brother has a full-grown English Mastiff and Woodrow's paws are already bigger than his! Woodrow's dad was a 190-lb English Mastiff and his mom was a 100-lb German Shepherd. The guy who sold Woodrow to me told me the mom was half Mastiff and half Shepherd, but I had a DNA test done, and the results show that Woodrow is half and half. So, unless the DNA test was off, my boy is half and half. I wanted to call him a German Mastiff, but that's also the name for a Great Dane! Oh well. I'll keep the pictures and weight chart up to date. So far, this is what I have...
15 weeks: 38.5 pounds
17 weeks: 50 pounds

Hi!
My another puppy is 5 months old and he has started barking at anyone we see when we are walking. He takes two walks a day. Always in the same neighborhood. We constantly have friends over our house, so it isn't like he is not socialized, plenty of interaction. He plays with a friends dog a few times a week. We have been home most of the summer, so he is getting attention. I have two young children. We are starting basic training the end of Sept. He is also starting to bark at anyone walking past my house and that is constantly, as we have a busy neighborhood with local park a few houses away and a well tread bike route.

I don't want to have a yappy dog. (he is a cockapoo) Please advise. I want to stop this behavior because it gets too bad! Thanks!!

Hello everyone,
I know a friend through a forum, they bought a mixed cocker spaniel puppy, love him and raise him as their own kid. Now the dog just turned one year old, and started to show rage syndrome, attacking the owner for no reason. The bite was quite bad (they showed me the injury picture)...and this is not the first time attack. The young couple was thinking of giving up the dog for adoption.

I personally think it is not easy to find a good home for him, as the adopter has to be very experienced in handling this kind of rage syndrome dog. But to euthanize the dog also very cruel too...
any other suggestion?

Hello,
I am having a lot of trouble finding the right dry kibble for my two greyhounds, Gus and Tulsa. Gus has had major digestive issues and Tulsa often has very soft stools. I have tried several dry foods, all researched online to be sure the food meets all canine nutritional standards. Right now they are eating Nutro lamb and rice formula, but their coats have become very dry and flaky and their stools are occasionally very soft--difficult to clean up on our walks.

I read recommendations for Natural Balance sweet potato and venison and also sweet potato and fish but when I went to Natural Balance's web site, the minimum protein listed is 20% and 21%. The greyhound book I have recommends protein levels of 22-27% and that the first six ingredients of a dog food should be animal derived. Both of these list sweet potato as the first ingredient. I am confused and really hope other greyhound owners can tell me which kibble I should try. Does a lower protein level matter? Should the first six ingredients be animal derived?

I would welcome any feedback--especially from anyone who has had digestive issues and dry coats. (Oh, I didn't mention that I do give pumpkin with both meals as recommended for soft stools.) Thanks!
