I have an 8 year old mini dach. who is the most docile creature to ever walk the earth. We recently added an English Mastiff pup to the family (july 4th to be exact). Our pup is just 4 months old last week and from the moment we got her very aggressive with the mini over food/treats/water. On the otherhand I can put my hand in her dish while she is eating and get no responce.... my 4 children are able to do the same. I have even tried taken a biscuit from her mouth, every time she submissivly drops the food and waits for the go ahead, but if I give her and the mini their bed time treats within eyeshot of one another she will charge the mini and do whatever she can to get that treat. Feeding time is the same, she will charge for the minis dish then surrender to hers when the mini's is all gone. I know she is not small, she eats 3 meals a day plus her training treats and kennel biscuits (bribe to happily get into the kennel) How can I get her to relax with the food?? I fear that when she hits full size she will gobble up my mini baby in one bite over a milk bone.

When I found this site I thought this looked like a lot of fun and a great place to observe and learn. I am all for learning as much as possible.
Like someone else said, Why have a masiff when you can have two?
So I have two mastiff puppies. One male and one female; they are as different as day and night. I only intended to get one (long story).

Aurora - female D.O.B. Feb. 20, 2010
12 wks. - 28lbs
14 wks. - 34lbs
16 wks. - 40lbs
19 wks. - 48lbs
20 wks. - 50lbs.
dam is 28" and 160lbs. sire is 35" and 245lbs.

Asa - Male D.O.B. March 5, 2010
12 wks. - 25lbs.
14wks. - 37lbs.
4 months - 55lbs.
18 wks. - 60lbs.
dam is 32" and 175lbs. sire is 36" and 250lbs.

Both puppies are raw fed.
Aurora's parents have been raw fed for less than a year. Dam was raw fed throughout pregnancy and nursing the pups but the pups were not started on raw. Aurora was fed Iam kibble for the first 12wks. Aurora eats 3lbs of chicken including bones and organs each day; split into three meals.

Asa's parents were fed commerical kibble. Asa started on raw food at 3 months. Asa eats 5lbs of chicken including bones and organs each day split into three meals.

The first week I had the puppies the received 4oz. of raw colostrum mixed in with two raw eggs each day to help reduce stress and build their immune sysytem.
They receive no other supplements.
Both puppies are vaccine free and live in a chemical free environment.

They seem to be growing much slower than most of the puppies on the list. It will be interesting to see the end result.

I would enjoy hearing questions and comments.

These are my first mastiff puppies. I have had Great Pryenees and Bernese Mtn. Dogs. I also have a Pryenean Mastiff (5yrs. old). I have fostered/rescued several mastiffs over the years. But these are the first mastiffs I have gone out and acquired to make part of the family.

Hello I have a 11 wk old Great Dane male. He has always had a biting issue and we have sprayed him w/water and given a firm "NO" which use to work but now it doesn't. He has started growling and even snapping at my 8 yr old daughter anytime she tries to pet him or pick him up to move him or help him from the car. I always tell him no and have began placing him in his kennel for 5 mins or so. When he licks her or lets her pet him w/o growling I reward him w/ praise or a treat. Nothing seems to be working with him and if you ever touch his muzzle when he's over excited and biting randomly he'll bit and bark at you. I thought Great Danes were gentle? He was the biggest in the litter and probably the boss. He's not an out of control dog yet but I don't want to get to that level. Any help would be great

Hello Everyone/Anyone Reading this...

My boy Optimus is 4 months, one week old (English Mastiff). Every time his hips come up he gets very stiff which I think is normal (?), and he slows down for a couple days then he is fine again. The reason for my worry is that yesterday he started getting sore & almost limping then today he is REALLY stiff, like takes him longer than normal to stand up and you can see him adjust & re-adjust himself before he stands up. I'm just wondering if this is normal for them? He did seem to grow LOTS this spurt so am I being a paranoid mom or is this normal???
I'm no vet, but I am a paramedic so I feel semi qualified in checking for abnormalities and I assessed his hips legs and everything and they feel equal & like nothing is out of place, and he did not seem to be in any pain anywhere I was pressing or touching... Thanks for any input!!!

Kahless and Sadie used to play a lot of tug of war. We think that could be how Sadie ruptured BOTH cruciate ligaments (knee joint ligaments) in her rear legs. Kahless is much bigger than Sadie and she is very stubborn; she doesn't like to lose so she won't give up. These dogs look incredibly strong, powerful and indestructible. Yet under certain circumstances they can sustain seriously painful and costly injuries which could potentially be crippling if not properly treated.

Here (10 months ago - Kahless was only 6 months old while Sadie was 2 1/2 years old) it should have been obvious to us that Kahless was too strong for Sadie. She's using her hind legs for brakes. Her limp didn't show up until recently but perhaps the damage began then.

Recently, Sadie suddenly began limping and seemed like she couldn't support much weight on first one leg then the other. We took her to the vet who took radiographs, made the diagnosis and then referred us to a surgeon. It will cost about $4,000 per leg to repair the damage and the recovery/rehab will take about 2-3 months per leg. If we had waited any longer to do the surgery she would have done irreparable damage to her knee joints possibly crippling her for the rest of her life.

Sadie goes in for her first surgery next week. Please wish her luck. My hope is that by sharing this experience we can spare other dogs and owners from the same fate.

This is a radiograph of the right leg:
